What Are Scoped Credentials for MCP Servers

8 min read

MCP lets agents talk to tools. That is useful. It also means credentials become part of the agent workflow whether the team planned for it or not.

The wrong pattern is simple: give the agent a broad .env file and hope it behaves. The better pattern is scoped, audited credential mediation.

Agent credential blast radius

Shared .env 95%

Agent can see unrelated credentials.

Personal token 80%

Often over-scoped and hard to audit.

Tool-specific key 58%

Better, but still static.

Scoped MCP token 24%

Narrow, logged, and revocable.

Credential management is authorization, not vibes

An agent should not get a credential because it is convenient. It should request a specific secret or action, pass policy, receive a scoped token, and leave an audit event.

The Model Context Protocol authorization work points in this direction: remote tools need real authorization boundaries, not just trust in the client.

Agents need different scopes from humans

A human might need a production break-glass path. An agent fixing a Terraform file probably does not. A code assistant reading staging config should not have the DNS API token for production.

CertLocker registers agents as assets and mediates access through tokens and audit records.

Start with read-only and staging

The first MCP credential workflow should be boring: read a specific secret, list allowed certificates, or request a scoped non-production token.

Once the audit trail is useful and the boundaries are clear, expand carefully.

MCP credential checklist

  • ✓ No shared production .env files for agents.
  • ✓ Each agent has an identity and owner.
  • ✓ Tokens are scoped by secret, certificate, host, or action.
  • ✓ Access expires automatically.
  • ✓ Every read, denial, and action is logged.
