Certificate management alternatives

Certificate lifecycle management tools: an honest comparison

The certificate renewed. Someone still has to deliver it, reload the service and check what users receive. Choose a tool around the part of that job your team needs help with.

Written by CertLocker, one of the vendors below. This is a shortlist by workflow, not a ranking from independent testing. Product sources reviewed ; confirm current integrations and terms with each supplier.

For a two-server shop, the answer may be Certbot

If renewal hooks and endpoint monitoring cover your two servers, use Certbot. Keep the working setup. A shared platform becomes worth evaluating when certificate ownership, access permissions, deployment and audit requests take more coordination than the renewal itself.

Eight tools, different jobs

A private CA, a Kubernetes controller and a fleet operations platform are different purchases. This table separates the job each covers from the work you still need to plan.

Certificate management tools, suitable workflows and operating requirements
ToolWhen to consider itWhat to check
Certbot A small server estate where ACME renewal and deployment hooks already cover the work. You own fleet orchestration, shared inventory and live endpoint monitoring. Multiple servers alone are not a reason to replace it.Certbot comparison →
cert-manager Kubernetes workloads that need certificates issued and renewed through Kubernetes resources. Plan certificate delivery and verification for services outside the cluster separately.
Smallstep step-ca A team building a private certificate authority for internal services, with automated certificate enrolment. You operate the CA and its trust distribution. Public browser-trusted TLS is a separate requirement.
HashiCorp Vault Teams that need private PKI alongside an existing secrets platform and its authentication policies. Include CA operations, availability and certificate consumers in the design. Keeping a working Vault deployment may be the right choice.HashiCorp Vault comparison →
AWS Certificate Manager TLS on supported AWS services, or exportable certificates where your team manages deployment to hosts. Exportable public certificates have separate charges. Renewal still needs a deployment process for exported certificates.AWS Certificate Manager comparison →
Keyfactor Command Enterprise certificate programmes requiring discovery, CA integrations and lifecycle orchestration. Validate the required orchestrators, rollout effort and commercial scope for your estate.Keyfactor Command comparison →
Infisical Teams evaluating secrets management together with internal PKI and certificate lifecycle workflows. Check the certificate integrations and product packaging you need. It handles certificates as well as secrets.Infisical comparison →
CertLocker Mixed Windows, Linux, cloud and on-prem infrastructure where teams need inventory, ACME, controlled delivery and live endpoint verification together. Check host reachability, SSH/SFTP permissions, CA support and service activation steps. It does not replace a public CA or every private PKI workflow.Platform details →

Looking for Keyfactor or Vault alternatives?

Write down the reason for switching before comparing feature lists. If the job is enterprise-wide CA orchestration, include that requirement in every discussion. If it is public TLS on HAProxy, Nginx and IIS, ask each supplier to walk through issuance, deployment, activation and a live certificate check on those services.

Read the Keyfactor alternatives comparison for enterprise PKI versus day-to-day certificate operations. The Vault alternative for certificate management page explains when existing Vault PKI is worth keeping. Neither decision should rest on an assumed price saving; compare quotes and the operating work for the same scope.

A Certbot alternative for multiple servers

Certbot can run across a fleet with your automation and deployment hooks. The question is whether the team also needs a shared owner record, scoped delivery, live verification and an audit trail. Compare Certbot and CertLocker on those jobs. For a Kubernetes estate, check cert-manager first.

An AWS ACM alternative for hybrid infrastructure

ACM supports exportable public certificates for use beyond AWS-managed services. Your team still manages deployment of those exports. Compare AWS ACM and CertLocker if you need multi-issuer ACME, scoped host delivery and endpoint verification across clouds and on-prem systems.

Bring the same workflow to every supplier

  1. Pick one real service and its current CA, certificate format and owner.
  2. Show how renewal reaches that service, including private-network routes and key custody.
  3. Run the installation and activation steps, then check the certificate the endpoint serves.
  4. Review who could retrieve material or run commands, and which audit records remain.
  5. Agree rollout, support, capacity and commercial terms for that scope.

Common shortlist questions

What is the best certificate management tool for a small team?

If you run two servers and Certbot renewal hooks plus endpoint monitoring cover the work, use Certbot. Consider a shared platform when ownership, delivery permissions, service activation or audit evidence are becoming separate jobs. Server count alone does not decide it.

What should we compare when looking for Keyfactor alternatives?

Start with the required CA integrations, discovery, deployment targets, access controls and audit evidence. Keyfactor, Vault, Infisical and CertLocker cover different operating needs. Compare the work each leaves with your team and request terms for the same scope.

Can we keep Certbot or cert-manager alongside CertLocker?

Yes. Existing ACME clients and automation can remain part of the workflow. Check how issuance, delivery, activation and live endpoint verification join up before replacing anything that already works.
