Certificate Management Software for HAProxy, Nginx, and IIS

10 min read

Certificate management software has to do more than count expiry dates. In real infrastructure, it needs to handle private keys, ACME orders, delivery, reloads, chains, Windows bindings, Linux services, and endpoint verification.

HAProxy, Nginx, and IIS all serve TLS differently. The management layer needs to respect that instead of pretending every target is a Kubernetes ingress.

Where certificate incidents usually appear

Unknown owner 74%

Nobody knows who should fix the cert.

Bad delivery 68%

The right cert is in storage, not on the service.

Missed reload 82%

The service still serves the old chain.

No endpoint proof 88%

Inventory and runtime drift apart.

Separate issuance from delivery

ACME issuance is only one part of the lifecycle. The issued certificate has to reach HAProxy as the right PEM bundle, Nginx as the right cert and key paths, and IIS through the Windows binding flow.

CertLocker keeps those delivery steps scoped and visible.

Probe what clients see

The live endpoint is the source of truth during an incident. A certificate can renew successfully and still fail because the chain is wrong, the reload missed, or SNI points to a stale default.

Endpoint probes close the gap between planned state and served state.

Use software that matches the estate

Cloud-native certificate tools are strong inside their supported cloud lanes. They are less useful for old Windows servers, HAProxy edges, private networks, mixed Linux services, and vendor portals.

That mixed estate is where CertLocker is designed to be evaluated.

Certificate software checklist

  • ✓ Inventory every certificate with owner, group, endpoint, and expiry.
  • ✓ Support ACME and manual/imported certificate workflows.
  • ✓ Deliver certificate material through scoped tokens.
  • ✓ Verify HAProxy, Nginx, IIS, and other runtime targets after reload.
  • ✓ Keep renewal, delivery, probe, and access evidence together.
